Preamble
The charter of the Java Card Forum is to:
- give visibility to the market on solutions for smart card operating systems, stressing standards, flexibility and multiple applications
solutions;
- promote interoperability of smart card applications and products;
- ease creation of products for the whole transaction chain, smart cards, terminals and their applications.
Members of the Java Card Forum have chosen to develop their new families of multiple-application products around the Java Card API
specification issued by SUN Microsystems.
Objectives
The objectives of the Java Card Forum are to:
- promote the Java Card language and associated standards to the smart card market and to specification developers;
- prepare technical documents (specifications, APIs, application notes and so forth) in support of Java Card;
- exchange technical information among members about Java Card and its implementation;
- propose to SUN Microsystems any useful improvement to the Java Card API specification;
- provide technical input to chip suppliers for chips embedded with Java Card implementations; and
- foster dialogue among software suppliers regarding Java Card API.
Participants
Participation in the Java Card Forum is open to companies and organizations with an interest in Java Card, divided into three categories: Membership, Strategic
Partner and Observer.
Membership
Membership in Java Card Forum may be accorded by the Members to any company that:
- endorses Java Card,
- commits to using Java Card in its products,
- commits to promoting Java Card as its favored solution for dynamic multiple application schemes,
- supplies products which embed (or will embed) Java Card API,
- is licensed Javacard by SUN Microsystems,
- applies for membership, and
- agrees to be bound by the by-laws of the group, including commitments to participate in/support the work of the Java Card Forum.
Strategic Partner
Java Card Forum can be a strategic partner to organizations that do not meet all of the criteria for membership, but have interests in Java Card and its
evolution as issuers of Java Cards, or representatives of issuers. In particular, Strategic Partners may be invited to join with the Business and/or Technical Committees of the Java Card Forum to provide input to
the proposals for Java Card specifications.
Observer
Observer status may be granted by the Members of the Java Card Forum to organizations that do not meet all of the criteria for membership, but have interests in
Java Card, and whose participation would be beneficial to specific objectives of the group. The Members may, from time to time as deemed beneficial, extend invitations to organizations to join defined activities of
the Java Card Forum. Observer status granted to any organization is temporary and linked to the defined purpose.
Financial
Activities of the Java Card Forum shall be funded by the Participants. Fees, dues and other assessments shall be decided by the Members.
